Article: A tornado are very dangerous, it can do so much damage when one hits the ground. Homes, buildings, properties, and many other things are destroyed or damaged in minutes, sometimes seconds. At least a few people die every year from tornadoes and hundreds get injured and become homeless. This is due to the strong winds and debris fling everywhere. A tornado is usually formed in a thunderstorm that can also bring other things with it like hail, lightning, and heavy rain. Even when a home is spared complete destruction, it can still have severe wind and water damage.

Storms like these usually occur in the late winter and springtime. Strong frontal systems are usually, but not always, formed around the center of the United States and move towards the east. Tornadoes are formed in the thunderstorm when a dry line takes place. This is when the warm moist air from the east is separated from the drier air of the west. Unless you are a meteorologist, it can be a little complicated to understand. Even now, they are still trying to figure out specifics about tornadoes so they can more easily predict when they might occur.

When you live in an area where tornadoes are common at those specific times of the year, then it is always wise to have a safe place to get in the home if there is a tornado warning issued. A tornado watch will only mean that conditions are favorable for the formation of a twister. A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service means that a tornado has been spotted near your area and you should always take cover immediately.

It is said that the safest places to get in the home is in a basement or in a room where there are walls all around like a closet. You should stay away from the windows as much as possible and try to cover yourself with with something heavy like chair cushions or even blankets if that is all you have. A light weight mattress from a bed is ideal for protection if you have time to retrieve one. The idea is to cushion your body so that flying debris or falling objects that might hit you may cause you less injury.

Even with the excellent warnings that we are able to get these days when there are severe storms with tornadoes approaching, it still is not enough to be able to stop the damage they do. Even if you are in the safest place in the home or stop your car and get into a ditch if you are driving, there are never any guarantees that a tornado will spare you.
