Title: Mississippi Is Sustaining It’s Environment Through The Natural Resources Initiative

Article: Enjoying an environment that is healthy, sustainable and beneficial to the economy is the goal of every state in the country, including Mississippi. In order to achieve this, the leaders of a community should be creative and proactive in protecting the community’s natural resources not only for their own benefit, but also for the welfare of future generations to come. Such is the goal and mission of the Natural Resources Initiative of North Mississippi (NRI).

The NRI is a non-profit organization composed of members from federal, state and local agencies as well as representatives from Mississippi’s natural resources and economic development sectors. Established in November of 2001, the NRI aims to protect the environment through a network of organizations. The network could foster good relationships among its member organizations where they could create partners and develop good business opportunities. The NRI serves and provides resources for a network of organizations and enterprises located within the twenty-eight counties of Northeastern Mississippi.

Shifting populations have always been a problem for local governments, even in Mississippi. This could create radical changes in the county’s economics that would sometimes compromise the protection of natural resources within that county. The NRI aims to help local governments achieve this balance with its programs and networks.

With its network of organizations, the NRI helps industries that are based in natural resources to develop methods and other means to diversify their products. This includes the proper use and management of timberland, alternative usage for farmlands and its by-products, and a tourism industry that relies on the promotion of ecosystems and the protection of the environment.

The NRI also aims to utilize best-management practices (BMPs) to develop a comprehensive program to address the needs of an increasing population while protecting Mississippi’s natural environment which include the air, sustainable source of water, and the quality of water.

Part of the NRI’s goal is to maintain a working inventory of natural resources at various levels in different counties to determine which area may require additional protection and which counties exhibit the potential for sustainable economic growth.

The NRI, together with its network of organizations are actively working and pushing for the implementation of the following programs geared towards the protection and proper management of Mississippi’s natural resources. These programs include but are not limited to:

* The establishment of a Forest Stewardship Certification (FSC) Pilot program.
* Improve the statewide tourism industry by promoting the natural ecosystem.
* The establishment of a Forest Legacy Program for the state.
* Provide support for the Heritage Woodland Restoration Project’s “Go Native” campaign.
* Provide conservation and environmental education for local schools.
* Spearhead sustainable growth projects that will be owned and managed by local communities.
* Provide support to the Take Pride in Mississippi / America program.
* The development of eco trails in Holly Springs and Tombigbee National Forests.
* The development of trails that will intersect the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Protecting and sustaining the environment is an important aspect that people of this nation should prioritize. Citizens and corporations should be made aware of the impact and the importance of protecting natural resources to the world we live in, and this can be achieved through the efforts of concerned organizations such as the NRI.
