From being used for drinking to cooling down power plants that energize the city, the importance of water is felt by all living things. This is the reason why the water resources of a particular area have to be in good condition all the time. Damage done to an area’s resources can have catastrophic consequences. Some of the things that can happen are the lack of potable water and the onset of droughts.
In Delaware, water quality is on the forefront of everyone’s mind. There are some people who have expressed concern about the quality of its water resources. Mostly because of the attitudes displayed, residents of Delaware have begun to notice a decline in the quality of the water in the area. In fact, the water in some areas has begun to smell like chlorine.
Reasons for the concern in water quality
There are various reasons why the water resources in Delaware may not be the best that it can be. Some practices that are common in Delaware are a source of alarm for those who are worried about water its water resources. For example, people are discouraged from using large amounts of salt on the pavement when there is snowfall. However, this advice is generally ignored and salt is used to clean the highways during winter. Most residents in Delaware are also not aware of practices that can degrade the condition of their water resources.
There is also a need to increase the awareness when it comes to the care of the sewage system. Most homeowners only empty out their tanks out of necessity. This is not recommended because the lack of regular maintenance and cleaning can lead to leaks which can contaminate the area’s water supply. Another major source of concern for those living in Delaware is the attitude of commercial establishments when it comes to water. Companies are not perceived by many as having sufficient safeguards when it comes to the disposal of their industrial wastes.
Putting up a fight to save the water
Fortunately, there are some steps that are taken to improve the water quality in Delaware. Due to an increased awareness of the situation, there are several institutions that were put in place by the local government to address the problem. One of these is the Water Supply Coordinating Council which is committed to increasing and maintaining the quality of the water supply of the area.
Local residents and establishments are also encouraged to do their share. There is hope because there is a genuine concern for this problem and many have expressed their desire to help. Thus, several programs to educate the public have been set in place to let the people know what to do. Information is really the best way to combat any kind of environmental concerns.
