Kilauea The Most Active Volcano On Earth

Author : Aydan Corkern

Of one of the most visited states in the United States is the beautiful Hawaii Hawaii is located in the central Pacific Ocean and is comprised of hundreds of islands that spread out over 1,500 miles It is home to over 1 2 million residents and is visited by millions of people every year who flock to see its many natural attractions Beautiful beaches and mountains, local hot spots, water activities, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, whale watching and skiing, and a host of other activities make Hawaii a top destination for tourists all over the world

One other element that makes Hawaii so popular is its volcano attractions Visitors are able to take aerial tours or even walking tours of volcanoes Granted, the tour would most likely occur when there is no activity, but it is a thrill to behold nonetheless One volcano that stands apart from the rest is the Kilauea volcano and the fact that it is one of the most active, if not the most active, volcanoes in the world is enough to persuade visitors to take tours on its land Located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, visitors embark on a trip that spans more than 125 miles and includes driving over four volcanoes In the park, a lava tube and even a rainforest adorn the land as well as various volcanic formations

Kilauea, which means “spewing”, is located on the main island of Hawaii and appears only as a bulge Its low profile demeanor is not to be taken for granted, however, for it is an active range that has been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983 It has erupted a full 61 times since 1983, but that does not include the lava-lake activity that occurs around the clock Kilauea volcano is the U S ‘s top producer of sulphur dioxide and is Hawaii’s most active volcano It erupts from three areas: its summit and two rift zones In addition to being one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea is also home to the volcano goddess Pele, and it is believed that eruptions occur when she is angry Certain traditions and chants include Pele

Through scientific research, it is believed that Kilauea will continue to erupt for eternity There is concern about it getting too large and the potential harm it could bring to both human and wildlife when it erupts sporadically, but only time will tell what will happen to Kilauea volcano

Yew Make My Heart Sing

Author : Anna Stenning

Yew is the best hedge plant there is In all my time around hedging plants, I have never heard anyone say anything against it A yew hedge plant has it all, superb windbreak shielding you from prying eyes and blotting out the evidence of passing traffic a few feet away Yes, it drops its needles, but discreetly and they seem to melt away before you have time to fetch a broom Its colour is magnificent – it is to hedges what British Racing Green is to generations of Lotus owners And that colour a dark, rich green, putting Lotus to one side, makes a wonderful backdrop for other plants – shrubs, herbaceous plants, roses, even vegetables

Some think yew is a bit ‘church yardy’ – rather gloomy and domineering Not if you keep it below 8 feet – by the way I can’t contemplate a hedge that would not be the centre of attention if it was over 8 feet tall Just think of giant hedges (the beech hedge at Meikelour for example) – they are the main attraction; people travel hundreds of miles just to see the hedge and forget the rest But just tall enough to hide the top of your six foot neighbours head is about ideal – and easily trimmed

Lower than that, and your hedge becomes an internal divider, separating garden ‘rooms’ You can give this shorter style of yew hedging more definition by using upright forms such as Irish Yew (Taxus baccata fastigiata) at the ends and corners of hedge runs The upright yews are ‘more column and less spread’ and so are purpose made to be clipped into square or round pillars; formal but effective

The number one reservation that people have about planting a yew hedge is that ‘everyone knows it is really slow growing’ At the risk of offending ‘everyone’ – they are wrong and it is not Don’t believe me; just take a look at a hedge near you We are only a few months into the growing season and newly planted and young yew hedges are roaring away I have a trough in which I grow bare root yew plants at 3 to the metre to show people what a newly planted hedge looks like They went in at the beginning of December (a good time to plant most bare root plants by the way) and have grown by over 8 inches (20 cms) already Given that the growing season has at least three more months to go they will easily top a foot (30 cms) for the year Remember mine are newly planted and containerised Established and in open ground they would have grown more

No article on yew hedging would be complete without a few words on clipping and pruning As with any hedge plant the early, formative clipping is important Be gentle but firm Trim the sides into a ‘batter’ so the hedge is wider at the bottom than at the top This lets the light reach low down and stops the hedge getting leggy Do this as soon as your plants begin to grow away strongly – by the end of June if they were planted before Christmas, not until the end of August if they were planted between January and March Leave the top of your hedge alone until it has reached its final height (which for a six foot hedge is probably four years after planting) Then clip the growing tips of the plants – they will never regain their vigour after that

Don’t clip your yew hedge plant after the end of September – this leaves enough time for it to grow a little and smooth sharp edges or maybe cover any mistakes

Talking of mistakes, the yew will re-grow willingly from old wood so the errors of your ways will not haunt you to the grave (as they do with Leylandii) As an illustration, if you cut a strongly growing yew plant down, the stump will sprout This is a bit extreme, but if your yew hedge is gappy or, more likely, over time gets wider than it should, simply cut the whole of one side back to the trunks in the middle of the hedge in late winter In a couple of years, that half will have regenerated and you can do it again on the other side

Plant your yew hedge this winter – it will make your heart sing for the rest of your life

Anna Stenning is knowledgeable on the world of yew hedge plants and planting hedges, for the best in long term growth and maintenance.

Why French Doors Are So Attractive

Author : Anna Stenning

Most people when beginning home improvement projects opt for extensions, a new conservatory, loft conversion, new bathroom or a newly fitted kitchen Often these come along with a lot of stress, time, money and patience The most popular choice for change comes from replacing their existing windows and doors If their house is too dark or does not allow too much scope for natural light, then the next step for improvement is to allow for more light to enter into the rooms

Popular choices for new doorways to the garden are French doors, which allow the person to have a full few to the outside world Debates have arisen as to whether French doors can come as single or just as double However, the double doors are the most popular choice for installation because they allowing much more light to enter in and they make the entrance to the garden appear larger They also make for an attractive feature to their house, due to their intricate wood carving and glazed glass window

These may not appear to be a very secure and safe feature, however with modern advancement and new locking methods they can be designed to be fairly heavy duty and difficult to break through However, these are far from being a modern feature as they have been around since the 17th century These were seen as window encasements, which were tall, wide and extended to the floor They often referred to as French windows as they were built specifically for allowing a large amount of light into the rooms

These were the days without electricity, so features like French doors were useful especially when there was no other means of allowing light into the home This was later introduced to the English an American architecture towards the end of the 17th century They were more popular on wrought iron balconies, however, as time passed on these became more of a fashionable feature and were used more for garden conservatories and within the house

In comparison to the old fashioned French homes in Louisiana, French doors have become larger, allowing in more light and can open up outwards towards the front or back porch Older French doors tended to be smaller and only opened up into specific places, these were never intentionally meant to be a design piece added to the house Also in this style is sliding doors which are designed in a very similar way as the standard French style doors, however, instead of being opened by their hinges, they slide open These are just as safe as can be secured with a three point locking system

Aside from lighting up several rooms naturally these also make a room seem wider and more appealing to walk into They are also relatively cheap to install and can come with an arched shaping

Anna Stenning plans to install French doors into her new home as it makes for an attractive feature adding in more light.

Dealing With Terrible Floods Worldwide

Author : Aydan Corkern

We have had so many different cases of terrible floods in our country the last couple of years that we can’t seem to be able to stay ahead of the clean up that is needed in these areas, but we aren’t the only country that has had terrible floods One that comes to mind is the flood that hit Venice this December first, and they say that it is the worst flooding that has hit this part of Italy in 22 years Water stood more than 5 feet deep in the Renaissance city before it started to recede A change in the direction of wind helped the water start to recede after it had reached 5 feet 2 inches

Nearly all of the streets of the city were under water by mid-morning, and they had workers setting up elevated walkways so that people could still get around They also have a new system that will send out messages over loud speakers with warnings and updates and can also send out text massages Venice has been flooded 50 times between the years of 1993 and 2002 with the worst incident happening in 1966 on the fourth of November and now this one

Since Italy is surrounded by water, the threat of rising water has always been a problem and now the city officials have been wrestling with a scheme to raise the city’s buildings to try to meet this problem They are looking into the use of piston-supported poles that are placed at the bottom of each of the structures to lift it by a meter This project is being called Operation Rialto As Venice was designated as a World Heritage site, the UNESCO warned it city leaders in 2007 that they are being threatened by climate changes

As this lifting procedure can take up to months per building to complete, with each of these buildings being raised by at least eight centimeters, it will take a while for each city along the coast to be able to even start this procedure, and then they aren’t really sure that they can do this as of yet, but they are looking into the likelihood of this happening in the near future If this is done in one city on their coast and this works, then I’m sure that all of the countries around the world will look into this possibility of doing it elsewhere as the means to stop so much damage of low lying waters

Maximizing Your Corner Cabinet Space

Author : Gary Nealon

If you are planning on tackling a kitchen renovation project on your own, it is inevitable that you will run into a situation where you are having a hard time fitting everything that you need and want The difficulty usually lies in the corners, where it may be difficult to maximize the utility of the base cabinets Luckily there are a few options to help with tricky corners when you are laying out your kitchen cabinet design

Whether you are talking about base cabinets or wall cabinets, it is really going to come down to three choices- a diagonal corner cabinet, and blind base cabinet, or leaving dead space Your decision on which to use will usually be based on a combination of available space, overall look, and need for storage space With that in mind, here are some pro’s and con’s for all three

BLIND BASE CABINET- When space is not available on both walls in a corner, the blind base cabinet is the cabinet to use The blind base cabinet is basically a two door cabinet that has one door removed It comes with an extra thick stile in the middle to allow the cabinet to be shifted left or right to fill the space The unique feature about a blind cabinet is that is can occupy anywhere from 42″, up to 48″ giving you versatility when laying out the kitchen The drawback to this cabinet is the fact that you don’t have easy access to the half of the cabinet that is hidden This can make it awkward to remove items placed back in there

DIAGONAL CORNER CABINET- Most stock cabinet manufacturers or rta cabinet importers will have these in one or two different size base cabinets, and they will usually come with a lazy susan kit installed In terms of available storage space, this cabinet will definitely give you the most It gives you easy access to the space by utilizing a bi-folding cabinet door While it is the most commonly used cabinet for a corner space, it does have it’s drawbacks The cabinet is usually 36″ on both sides, which means that you are limited on how you can arrange the cabinets on either side of it While is gives you access to the full space, the lazy susan unit will sometimes limit how you can use that space Even with the drawbacks, it is still the most common corner cabinet used in kitchen design

DEAD SPACE – If you are limited on both walls, and the blind cabinet would take up too much space, the last alternative would be to leave dead space While losing storage space is the last thing you want to do, it is sometimes unavoidable (especially in small kitchens) When neither of the options above will work, you have to think about maximizing the space around the corner To do this, you will be butting the edges of the cabinets from the two walls together The tricky part comes when you have drawers By simply butting them together you will not be able to open the drawers To get around this, you will need filler strips in the corner to bump out the cabinet and allow room for the drawer(s) to open

So if you are tackling a kitchen renovation on your own, it is important to focus on the corner cabinets and the appliances, filling in the gaps from there
