What Do You Do When You Have A Drought

Author : Aydan Corkern

Do you know what happens in a drought? Water gets really low, and you have to watch how much water you use, whether it’s taking a bath, washing clothes or dishes, or watering your yard When it is really hot outside and there is no rain, the water starts to drop in the dams and in the rivers, and it can get down to a dangerously low level

When the water is too low, you may not be able to take a bath, you may have to only take a shower and it has to be a short shower because the whole family has to take one, too But if you are the only one in the house, you still have to take a short one It may only be for less than 10 to 15 minutes So when this happens, you better go fast to get all the dirt off your body and get really cleaned

When you wash your clothes, you can only wash one load a day or the whole thing once a week It can be really hard at times, but you have to work around it to get through it With little kids it can be hard because they can go through a lot of clothes, but you have to watch how much you use on them or watch how much they use, so you do not have a lot of clothes to wash

In some states, you can’t even water your yard due to the water being so low Your yard will get brown, and you will get bald spots on it But in other states when there is a drought, you can only water your yard a little bit, enough to get it through and to keep it a little green If you can do this, then you can only have it on for a few minutes

Water will come, but you just have to wait for it to rain and hopefully it rains a lot, but not too much because you could have a flood if it gets too bad When the rain comes, it can last for days and the drought will go away Then you can use as much as you need while being mindful of conserving Even if you don’t have a drought, you still need to save your water so you have enough when it does happen again

Sometimes, refurbishment is done to convert your aging home into a sparkling environment Mostly, office spaces and premises are refurbished in order to provide them a modern as well as sophisticated look

Refurbishing homes and offices involve not only making your healthy as well as a comfortable place to live in but also involve decorating them in such a way that goes with your lifestyle and preferences

Today, a plethora of innovative and decorative options are available to choose from in order to beautify your homes and offices during refurbishing process Among which, a unique option is to decorate and refurbish homes with Chinese ceramics

Chinese ceramics is a kind of fine art that has been developed during the dynastic periods in China China is always especially known for its rich raw materials that are widely used for making ceramic items

The origin of Chinese ceramics traces back to the Palaeolithic era, which is almost 10,000 years ago Nowadays, Chinese ceramics are available in a continuum of forms such as tiles, bricks, hand-made pottery vessels, and elegant porcelain wares

In other words, Chinese categorized into three prominent types: earthenware, porcelain, and stoneware Due to its features such as higher porosity, fragility, and less tough, earthenware ceramic material is most commonly used to make decorative articles and tableware

Porcelain is a kind of ceramic material that is replete with such properties as high durability, brittleness, low permeability, high resistance to electricity and chemical attack, and glassiness Perhaps, for this reason porcelain used to make items such as kitchen, table, and sanitary wares as well as fine art articles

Stoneware is a kind of ceramic items, which is impermeable as well as hard enough to defy scratches by steel point In addition, it is usually glazed and is colored either grey or brownish Chinese ceramics are further classified into high fired and low fired

Aforesaid are just a brief info on Chinese ceramics as well as its different types and purposes Now we will discuss the role of Chinese ceramic items for refurbishing homes and offices

One of the most prominent Chinese ceramic items used to refurbish homes and offices is Chinese ceramic tiles, which come in a myriad of size, shape, and style Crystal tiles, decorative tiles, floor tiles, glazed tiles, laminate floor tiles, porcelain polished tiles, wall tiles, and vitrified tiles are just few among them

Chinese ceramic tiles now come in a plethora of design, texture, pattern, style, and shape, which in turn complement the ambience of any home or office Further, they are beautiful, and available in a variety of finishes such as matt, glossy, and satin

A specialty of Chinese ceramic tile is that it can be creatively used anywhere including corridor, kitchen, toilets, and service as well as utility walls It can also be applied on the slump walls and overhead tank, which in turn enables for easy cleaning

Apart from durable as well as versatile tiles, Chinese ceramic items are also available in the form of decorative items Decorative Chinese ceramic items range from antique artifacts dating back to ancient Chinese dynasties to most stylish as well as sophisticated items

Energy Within Using Geothermal Energy

Author : Kevin Rockwell

This means of energy production uses the heat of the earth to generate power Currently around 8,000 MW of electricity, with 2,800 MW in the United States alone As with many other alternative sources, geothermal shows great potential In a report released last year, the U S Geological Survey estimates that the geothermal potential in the U S alone is between 95,000 and 150,000 MWe (megawatts of electric power) A report issued just last year by MIT estimates the world’s geothermal potential using Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) at more than to be over 13,000 ZJ (a zettajoule is 1021) of which over 200 ZJ would be extractable with current technology

Geothermal Technology

There are two basic types of geothermal power plants currently in use Steam plants can use the hot water and very hot steam (over 300F) to power a turbine that feeds a generator directly (“dry steam”) or they can depressurize the very high-pressure and temperature water to create steam (“flash steam”) The only emission in enough quantity to be significant is steam, although minute amounts of CO2, NOx and sulfur are released (in amounts almost 50 less than the amounts emitted at fossil fuel plants) Currently steam plants can generate electricity for about 4 cents to 6 cents per kWh

Binary plants can operate at locations with lower temperatures ((100 F to 300 F), which is more readily available Hot water passes through a heat exchanger along with a working fluid that has a lower boiling point (e g , isobutene, isopentane) The working fluid vaporizes, turning the turbines and powering the generators

Because this system is a closed loop, there are no emissions Currently steam plants can generate electricity for about 5 cents to 8 cents per kWh Because the lower-temperature geothermal locations are more plentiful, most plants are binary

Geothermal energy can also be used a direct heat source Nearly all the houses in Iceland are heated with water from hot springs, and the country generates more than half its energy from geothermal sources If the heat is there but the water is not, energy can still be extracted Pumping water through hot rock heats the water and can be used directly or to generate power

Underground heat pumps are also a form of geothermal energy, these work like refrigerators in reverse Believe it or not, you don’t have to dig very deep to find the level of earth that stays at a fairly constant temperature – usually about 8 feet Heat pumps use pipes (buried well below the frost line) that circulate a refrigerant through a cycle of condensing and evaporating between two heat exchangers One heat exchanger evaporates at low pressure and absorbs heat A compressor pushes the refrigerant vapor, now at high pressure, to other coil where the refrigerant condenses and releases the heat Unlike refrigerators and air conditioners, heat pumps can work in both directions-heating and cooling Energy cost savings with a ground-based heat pump are substantial

Geothermal Power Advantages

1 Geothermal energy produces little or no emissions

2 In most cases, the “fuel” is free, although with the “hot rock” method water must be used, and may have to be transported there Once the power stations are built they cost very little to operate

3 Geothermal power plants usually have a small footprint, and very little environmental impact

4 Ground-based heat pumps can be used almost anywhere If you’re thinking that they won’t work in your snowy neck of the woods, consider that they are used extensively in Canada

Geothermal Power Disadvantages

1 Geothermal cannot be considered a renewable resource (although it is a sustainable one)

2 Not every area has accessible geothermal sources The hot rocks and water must be within drilling range (except in the case of natural geysers)

3 Geothermal sites can run out of steam, as their temperatures drop to low This can happen naturally or if a “hot rock” extraction method is mismanaged, and the water injected cools the rocks

4 Along with the hot water and/or steam, geothermal sources can also yield up harmful gases and minerals

5 Drilling deep into the ground, especially when water is then pumped into the holes, can set off “small seismic events” – earthquakes

6 While research can suggest likely places for geothermal power plants, there is no guarantee a given site will produce enough energy to offset the capital expenditure and operating costs

What Can You Do?

Ocean and earth power gives you a lot of options We’ve collected the ideas from this chapter-hydropower, tidal power, wave power, ocean thermal conversion, and geothermal power- at the end to remind you of the variety, and to reinforce the idea that while there is no single perfect alternative energy source for the world, or even the country, there are many that in combination could be the perfect solution for you Much depends on where you live and what resources you have

1 If you have a river, stream, brook, waterfall or some other running water nearby, look into installing a microhydro system to generate some or all of your electricity

2 If you live on a body of water that experiences tides, you may be able to use them to your advantage Naturally you won’t be damming up estuaries to power your house (your own personal tide mill), but it is possible that you could implement something on a much smaller scale that powers, say, your dock lights Realistically, however, what you’ll be doing is keeping up with the technology so you’ll know when someone has developed something with a more personal application

3 While none of the wave power technologies are available as personal-size power stations, if you live somewhere that has strong, consistent waves, you may be able to adapt some of the techniques

4 While you probably don’t have a geyser in your yard, you might be able to install a ground-based heat pump to heat and cool your house

Pampas grass is a worthy grass for any garden or landscape It is also known as the Cortaderia Selloana or the Uruguayan Pampas Grass It is part of the Poaceae family and of the genus Cortaderia

This tall grass is actually a native of the South America, particularly in the southern part of this continent It is even named after the place Patagonia This name was coined in 1818 by Alexander von Humboldt It was claimed to be named after a German botanist who studied intensively the plants of the South America

Pampas grass can reach a tall height of three meters They have relatively long and evergreen leaves that can range from one to two meters in length and one centimeter in width These dimensions are not to be taken lightly as the grasses are also known for their sharp edges Thus, it can cause some cuts One must handle this grass properly

The leaves are generally in evergreen color although most people would describe it as bluish-green There are also some that can develop a silvery grey color The pampas also bears flowers that create a dense mass of white articles in their 20 to 40 centimeters length

The good thing about pampas grass is that they can easily adapt to their environments and they are not very choosy of the climate and temperature They are also able to proliferate easily Each grass is capable of bearing over a million seeds during its plant life However, this characteristic can also make the pampas very much disfavored like in areas of Hawaii and California These are even banned in the New Zealand There, people are prohibited from selling and planting this grass

Pampas grass, being of South American origin, was only introduced to the North America and Europe There it became useful as an ornamental grass The flowers of the pampas are also feathery enough These can make avery beautiful displays and lovely details to a flower arrangement when dried out

Some of the varieties of the pampas grass are the albolineata, a smal type that grows up to maximum of two meters only, and the sunningdale silver, a favorite among many for its colors

Pampas grass can make a good addition to your garden if you have an area that needs to be shielded from view They can also be great along a fenced in area if you want to soften up the sharp edges of the fence Many people plant them at the edges of the woods, in the back of their garden for a greener backdrop

How to Use the T Square for the Draftsman

Author : Jimmy Cox

Mechanical drawing is entirely different from freehand drawing In freehand drawing the artist takes a pencil and some paper and sketches roughly what he sees – whether it is a portrait, a landscape or a nude figure In doing this he makes use of his creative ability – his artistic sense – as well as his knowledge of design and anatomy If he is sufficiently creative and gifted, his drawing will be a “work of art” even though it will be far from an accurate representation of the real thing

Now the draftsman is not an artist in the above sense He is not supposed to be an artist, and he need have no artistic ability or knowledge of anatomy for his important profession He never draws from nature because all his subjects are man-made things

Good draftsmanship is really accurate, neat, clear line representation of mechanical objects drawn solely for the purpose of enabling carpenters, contractors and mechanics to make these objects A mechanical drawing of a large oak tree or a beautiful nude girl would be just as impractical as a rough and totally inaccurate sketch of a vital machine part Anyone can be a draftsman if he is willing to work and apply himself to accurate precision drawing

There is absolutely no doubt that the postwar period will make extreme demands on the draftsman All branches of engineering, as well as architecture, are sure to spurt ahead as never before Technical men are sure to be in great demand, particularly in the field of electronics and electronic machinery, and in the building field

In all fields, whether in engineering, architectural or machine shop work, the draftsman is a very important person, for he is the middleman between the engineer and contractor; the architect and builder; the designing engineer and the machine shop mechanic

Below are some useful exercises to practice using the t-square used in mechanical drawing Follow these steps carefully and do everything that you are told to do:

First:

Place a sheet of paper on your drawing board and secure it to the board by means of the tape or the thumb tacks (one tack in each corner) There should be about an inch margin all around the paper; or, in other words, the paper should be 2 inches shorter and 2 inches narrower than the drawing board

Second:

Hold the T-square in position and draw a line clear across the paper, from left to right Move the T-square up and down and draw six or seven other lines clear across the paper

Third:

Take your ruler and measure off 9-1/2 inches somewhere near the top of the paper Do this by making two small points 9-1/2 inches apart Now bring the T-square up to these points and draw a line connecting them This is the way to draw a line of a given length with your T-square Practice by measuring off other distances, like 7-1/4 inches, 11 inches, etc , and draw lines connecting them

Fourth:

Now place the ruler in a vertical position at the left of the paper and mark off every half inch for four inches You will have eight tiny points, one under the other Now draw a line through each of these eight points with your T-square; you will then have eight parallel lines spaced a half-inch apart

Repeat this operation, marking off quarter-inch points instead of half-inch points Mark off 16 points a quarter of an inch apart, one under the other, and draw the sixteen lines with your T-square Now do the same thing with sixteenths of an inch and draw the thirty-two lines with the T-square This is excellent practice in the use of the T-square
