Rhode Island was once called “Little Rhody” since it’s the smallest state among all the states of the US Eventually, the state adopted the nickname “Ocean State” The reason behind this is the fact that one tenth of its inland area is covered with water resources and no part of the state is more than thirty minute drive from the water’s edge

This makes Rhode Island abundant in natural resources Rhode Island’s tourism, economic development and fisheries depend mostly on the state’s flowing rivers and streams To date, the fresh water resources of Rhode Island remain the state’s great asset

Narrow River is one of the most unique and valuable resources of Rhode Island It is known not only for its recreational and scenic values but also because of its diverse wildlife habitat The water quality of Narrow River has become a growing concern in the past few years A number of studies show that rapid development of land within the watershed causes non-point pollution due to surface water runoff, storm water outfalls and septic system This brought the Narrow River Preservation Association (NRPA) to life The Mission of NARP includes the preservation, restoration, and conservation of the Narrow River Watershed, which is considered as a valuable natural resource

The natural function of Narrow River is slowly being devastated due to improper waste disposal and other activities in land Because of this, Narrow River is currently closed to shell fishing due to the presence of coliform bacteria In lieu of this, education has been the main focus of Narrow River Preservation Association The organization provides informational and educational resource to the public that lives near or uses the river for recreational purposes In this regard, the NRPA is still seeking for volunteers who will perform the following responsibilities:

1 Cooperate with environmental groups in Rhode Island and in other states in planning and monitoring development within the Watershed

2 Through education and outreach programs, the organization does its share of work to making the community aware of the history, problems, and potentials of the Watershed

3 Maintain awareness of changes proposed in the Watershed and ensure that these changes are of benefit to all communities in the Watershed

A volunteer doesn’t need to have special expertise or scientific experience Necessary training and equipment is supplied by URI’s Watershed Watch staff

The NRPA also continues to look for members By becoming a member of NRPA you will be supporting NRPA’s programs of public and youth education, environmental achievement, water quality monitoring, and land development oversight Some of the programs in Rhode Island that NRPA will be able to perpetuate and expand with your financial support include:

1 The expansion of NRPA’s educational programs in the Watershed, including the Active Watershed Education (AWEsome) program, now offered in Watershed schools in Narragansett, South Kingstown, and North Kingstown

2 The continued funding of science fairs, youth environmental achievement awards, and college scholarship programs in area schools

3 NRPA involvement in development issues such as the Middlebridge Bridge replacement and proposed Robin Woods subdivision
