How Floor Heating Is More Cost Effective

Author : Anna Stenning

New homes these days come with fully furnished equipment, mod con kitchen, newly fitted tiled bathrooms and modern decor for the bedrooms Unfortunately they still come with radiant heating which in this day and age has proven to be less energy efficient They are highly effective in providing into a single room but they are also something of a nuisance These very often only seem to warm up the upper half of the body rather than the all important lower part of the body

Warming up the top half of the body usually leaves people feeling extremely dehydrated, lethargic, often suffering from headaches and feeling uncomfortable This can be very unfortunate especially if you live in a climate such as that of the UK Other types of heating systems tend to be more expensive, some come in the of portable fan heaters which are more uncomfortable and can often be dangerous

Other more modern heating systems such as floor heating tend to be more cost effective and energy efficient These can be installed as hydraulic systems or as an electric system which is designed to warm up the house evenly, distributing heat underneath the floor boards The advantages of having these installed are that they provide heating for tiled and wooden floors, therefore reducing the uncomfortable feeling of walking barefoot on cold flooring; and they warm up the bottom half of the body making it feeling more comfortable and reducing the feelings of lethargy

Floor heaters are designed to heat the room evenly, through circulating heat from the floorboards This means that the heat does not reach the ceiling area where it is not needed and evidently wasted Radiant heaters rise up to the ceiling making the warmest part of the room, and only managing to heat up the top half of the body Floor heaters maintain heat towards the bottom half of the home by gently rising keeping the feet warm

On top of the even distribution of heat, floor heating systems are easily controllable from one controlling device The thermostat can be set to warm up rooms individually, controlling the temperature and placing a timer for those individual rooms This works by separating the heaters into zones, therefore, you are able to determine which zones are warmed up first and for how long These can also be used as a coolant during the hot summer periods, making them more efficient in cooling the rooms better than a ceiling or standing fan

They are cost effective in that they can be controlled individually and they heat the rooms up gradually without wasting any energy in doing so They require a lower temperature setting compared to a normal radiator, therefore it will cost less to run There will also be less dust traps as radiators tend to attract more dust, which can aggravate people with dust allergies The furniture around the room can also be easily laid out, because floor heating systems do not need to be mounted on walls like radiators reducing space wastage and allowing for a relatively dust free air

Anna Stenning is an expert on floor heating having just recently installed this system in her new home.

Advice For Hiring a Contractor

Author : Jim Corkern

Most people would love to be able to design and have a home built just for them, but not everyone has this opportunity If you do, though, it would benefit you to do a lot of research beforehand to make sure that you get the right person to do the job

Something you should understand about hiring a contractor is that the best place to find a good one is not in the phone book The contractors with the ads that look the best are not always the best people for the job and if you or someone you know has ever had a home built and was dissatisfied, then you probably already know this Ask your friends and relatives for someone that they can recommend to build your home for you, even if the only work they have had done for them is some small scale remodeling

If the contractor that they hired did a good job, then even if that person does not build entire homes, they can probably point you to someone else who will do similar quality work Only resort to the phone book if you cannot find anyone through friends or relatives

Get a few different contractors from any source you like, but be sure to talk with them face to face first You will have to deal with them for at least a few months of your life, so make sure that you get along You need to have somewhat of a bond with your contractor so that you can focus on getting the house done right, not arguing

The contractor you choose should also have all the appropriate insurances and that you can obtain a copy of all of these policies to keep on hand in a job file Keep a record of every piece of paper concerning the job and the progress of the project, including a payment schedule You should pay your contractor as the work is done and never let your payments get ahead of the amount of work that has been done on the house

Mold can also grow on building materials that are stored directly on the ground Visit the job site regularly to make sure that the contractor is not doing this, especially with drywall Everything should be stored on tarps and the site should be covered during rain until the roof and walls are put up to protect the interior

Why and How of Hurricanes

Author : Brian Jones

A hurricane is a naturally-occurring violent tropical storm characterized by spiraling winds of high speed and great destructive power The diameter of the wind spiral may reach into several hundred miles Hurricanes develop from large warm bodies of water and then move towards land at a speed of ten to thirty miles per hour Hurricanes can produce torrential rainfalls, high waves and storm surges

The term hurricane is used for tropical storm that occurs in North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Elsewhere the terms used are typhoons (Northwest Pacific) or cyclone (Indian Ocean) The term hurricane is derived from the Caribbean Amerindian word for storm god called “Huracan ”

Hurricane season usually occurs from July to November peaking around August to September

A hurricanes is formed when warm air that is over the ocean surface evaporates into the atmosphere due to solar heating and is replaced by colder, denser air rushing inwards towards the eye and then spiraling upwards around it This becomes a low pressure area A hurricane’s chief energy source is the discharge of the heat of condensation from water vapors that are condensing at higher altitude The eye is usually circular and may range from 1 9 miles (3 km) to 230 miles (379 km) in diameter Winds usually develops around the eye

When the maximum sustained wind reaches 33 miles/ hour (54 km/h) it is called a tropical depression A tropical storm develops when the maximum sustained wind is between 35 to 63 miles/hour (56-102 km/h) It becomes a hurricane once the maximum sustained wind is between 64 miles/hour (104 km/h)and 140 miles per hour (220km/h)

There are several factors that affect the formation of a hurricane One is the water temperature of the Atlantic Ocean’s surface A water temperature of not less than 26 5 degrees Celsius (79 7 degrees Fahrenheit) to a depth of not less than 50 meters (160 feet) is needed to cause the atmosphere to be unstable and create convection and thunderstorms Another factor is the fast cooling as the water vapor goes up High humidity in the troposphere is also needed since large amounts of moisture in the air are favorable for the formation of the weather disturbance

Wind shear should not be low because a high wind shear is not favorable to the circulation of the storm The storm should form at least 555 km (345 miles) away from the earth’s equator so that winds blowing towards the center of the low pressure are is deflected by the Coriolis effect thus creating circulation Finally, a pre-existing system of weather disturbance should be present
