Easy Ways To Avoid Electrical Fires

Author : Aydan Corkern

No home would be considered complete in this day in time if it did not have electricity It is just impossible to imagine not having it even though there are still so many families around the world that do not have this particular luxury We use electricity for so many different purposes on a daily basis We do tend to waste a lot of it without even realizing that we are When our bill comes in every month it is getting a lot easier for us to think about ways we can save some of the electricity that we use

We usually do not give a lot of thought either about how safe our electrical wiring is and electrical items we use everyday When a light switch or outlet stops working, sometimes we will just ignore it and use a different one This can often happen in older homes that have faulty or outdated wiring and outlets There is more home fires started every year because of faulty or outdated wiring than you might think and it is important that you make sure yours in good working order

If you live in an older home and are not sure about the condition your wiring or fuse box is in, it might be a good idea to have an electrician come in and do an inspection He can repair any faulty outlets or light switches for you and examine your fuse box to make sure circuits are not being overloaded Sometimes people will use outlet adapters for a three pronged plug and put it in a two prong outlet You might have a power strip that is carrying current too many items Extension cords should not be used unless they are in good condition and for no longer than necessary Never use extension cords underneath carpets or rugs because this is just a fire waiting to happen

If you have lamps, kitchen or bathroom appliances, or power tools that have frayed cords or that give off sparks, do not use them Have the cords repaired before you use them again and definitely either fix or discard any electrical item that shocks you, gives off sparks, or has a smell of overheating when it should not Just by having your home wiring checked and keeping an eye on electrical items you can reduce the risk of having an electrical fire in your home a lot

How A Flood Can Cause Water Damage

Author : Aydan Corkern

When you have a leak in your pipes that is caused by your sinks, tub, or your water heater, it can flood your floors and cause water damage all over your house It depends on how long it has been going on and how long the water has been sitting there Water can damage your walls, floors, carpets and many other things in your home It can cause mold, and it can spread throughout your home depending on how much moisture gets to it and how long moisture stays in those areas

When your sinks have a leak it can rot the walls and the floors It can bow them down and make them fall apart piece by piece or all at once It gets them wet first, and then it starts to weaken it After all that, it will start to grow mold, and you will start seeing black spots on the wood and the dry wall You will smell a musty odor in the air, which is very toxic because it is from the mold It can rot all the way through the floor, and if you have a basement it will go down there and will damage and stain things It will also grow mold down there on your bricks, carpets, and in boxes

If you have a leak between the walls or in the bathtub, it can leak on your carpet and cause mold to grow under it and rot the floor that the carpet is over You will start to see black spots around the tub, and your wall will be soaked in water It will start to break apart around the faucet As time goes by the wall will start to form a hole, and you will see the mold growth and the water damage

If your hot water heater leaks due to the cold or just by a cracked pipe, you can have a flood of water on your floor It can also make it to where you are stepping in it This means you will have to fix the whole floor before mold can grow because there is too much water damage from it It happened to my parents one year, and it was cold outside They woke up and stepped in water; it was all over their house The leak was caused by the water heater pipes breaking open

You need to keep an eye on your pipes whether it is cold outside or not because pipes can crack or break at anytime

A Sunny View for Rainwater Harvesting

Author : Marcus Bicknell

Reports on the economy are never consistent It appears that the building industry has not grown for the last year and a half So it may appear that we are showing off when we tell you that at present the market for rainwater harvesting is distinctly sunny The Rainwater Harvesting Federation says that sales of the systems have risen 300 percent over the last 2 years

Rainwater harvesting is a new market in the UK and the first detailed market research report by MTW Research came out in April 2008 estimating for that year #8 million, strong growth to 2012 and then consistent growth to 2020 The German market was worth #251 million in 2007, and we’re expecting the British market will head towards that figure

You may ask why we are so optimistic?

Unfortunately the rosy future for rainwater harvesting arises from the increasingly serious shortage of mains water supply in the UK, where many areas are already under “water stress” The general public has become more and more aware of the problem with rising water bills Furthermore, the hosepipe bans during the very hot summer of 2006 brought home the reality of water shortages, and floods in 2007 and 2008 reinforced the belief in climate change Also, as the government pressures us to reduce water consumption, rainwater harvesting will slowly become a necessity throughout building sectors using the following measures:

a) The Code for Sustainable Homes has required social housing to meet level 3, reducing mains water consumption to 105 litres per person per day by using rainwater harvesting and water efficient appliances This should become obligatory for the private sector in 2010

b) In October 2009, Part G of the Building Regulations was altered to enforce a limit of 125 litres per head per day of mains water consumption in new builds

c) Councils give priority to planning permission to applications with rainwater harvesting

d) Flood Attenuation Planners now encourage and impose rainwater harvesting to alleviate flood threats

e) Businesses can benefit from the Enhanced Capital Allowance: 100% of material and installation costs of rainwater harvesting systems registered on Water Technology List can be offset against tax liability

f) Water boards will get greater hosepipe ban powers during water shortages due to new legislation Hosepipes will be banned for topping up pools, hot tubs and decorative ponds, as well as for watering gardens and outdoor cleaning

g) British Standard 8515 came out in February 2009 on installation of rainwater harvesting (Code of practice rather than obligatory)

What is going to happen in 2010?

In the domestic sector, growth will continue strongly when Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes becomes mandatory, helped by the change in Building Regulations Average cost of an installation in a new build is #2000 to #3000 Retrofitting will see slower growth as not normally obligatory and more expensive Commercial installations will continue to grow as the payback period on the investment is usually much quicker, and boosted by ECA tax scheme which the domestic sector does not as yet benefit from

I’ve been asked many times over the years, how do I go about choosing a wall mirror that will fit in well with a particular room of my home? My answer to that is you have to know what room the wall mirror will be hung in and what style of mirror will match up with the theme of the room

Let me start with a question Which room in your home will this wall mirror hang in? Since we are only talking about wall mounted mirrors, your first thought should be the style For the most part the different styles of wall mirrors are Traditional, Ornate, Modern, Frameless, Venetian and Kids

Next you should think about what shape you would like this wall hanging mirror Here your choices are rectangle, square, round, oval, arched, abstract, sunburst, octagon and custom

What I call custom, is a wall mirror that is shaped in a non-uniform manner An example of a custom wall mirror is a framed sectional mirror There is a vanity mirror with a carved wood frame that actually holds 3 separate mirrors There are 2 arched mirrors on each side, with a rectangle mirror in the center of the frame Let me tell you this piece of wall mirror woodwork is absolutely gorgeous! Another simpler example of a custom wall mirror would be a triangular shaped mirror

The next question you should ask yourself is do you want beveled glass or flat edge glass for your wall mirror Here your choice is a matter of your own taste Some people think that beveled glass mirrors are more elegant, while others prefer the clean look of flat edged glass wall mirrors All you have to do is shop and compare until you have made your decision

Another important feature of a wall mirror is if you want your mirror framed or frameless If you go with a framed wall mirror, you have a large variety of choices Here we will start out with what material your mirror frame can be made from Your frame material choices are metal, wood, resin/acrylic, glass and believe it or not there are also available recycled magazines and recycled newspapers under the category of "Other Frame Materials " So when it comes to frames for your wall mirror, the category is wide open!

Next thing on your list is to decide on what color you would like your mirror frame to be Although your color choices are unlimited if you choose to go with a custom color There are also a few standard colors available Your standard colors are brown, gold, silver, black, bronze, white, copper and red If you vision a multi-colored mirror frame or some color to match the decor of the room, you can have your wall mirror frame made to match the color You are in total control of the full color spectrum

Your final, but not least important factor in selecting the perfect wall mirror is the size Go up to the wall that you want to hang the mirror With a ruler in hand, measure the width and height of the area of wall that you want your new mirror to occupy Make sure your measurements are accurate Once you are sure about the size of your wall mirror, you are finished with your research and ready to buy

Now you can go out or shop online feeling assured that you have done your homework and that your decision will be an educated decision

Live Oak Tree Acorn Traditions

Author : Terry Gray

The mighty live oak has captured the hearts and minds of many cultures throughout the ages, with several, like the pagans, actually worshiping trees It’s not that great a surprise when you realize that oak trees are useful in building, homeopathy, and even as a food source!

That last use has been common in Europe, where it provides a simple food source during times of famine While it’s said bread made from it is less than delicious, a full belly when there is food shortages would make it a major comfort despite it’s taste However, you can expect to spend a lot of time prepping the acorns before you can grind them to make edible flour

This is because of the tannin within the acorn It’s both poisonous and bitter, so you definitely want to leech it out before even thinking about using it! However, you’ll need to prepare the acorns before you can start leeching out the tannin If you think it might be fun to make your own flour from a live oak tree, you’ll likely want to choose the American Oak over the English Oak—it contains significantly less tannin, so the acorns require less leeching time I would not try it unless you know what you are doing!

The first thing you’ll want to do is pop them in the oven Just place the acorns on a tray and use a very low heat to both dry them out, and to kill any bugs that might be present So appetizing this will get you ready for the first of the time consuming tasks you’ll need to accomplish for your acorn flour

Take your dried acorns, and crack the shells off Only once the shells have been removed is leeching going to do you any good Now you can finally begin the leeching process, which is time consuming but extremely simple It’s a matter of soaking the shelled acorns in water for as much as two weeks Changing the water at least twice a day is also required to maximize tannin removal After a few days, you can test them by simply biting into one to see if it’s still bitter If it is, soak them longer

After that, it’s a simple matter of grinding it into flour or meal, depending on how you prefer to make it The best part is you don’t have to wait on more drying time—you simply grind them up while wet, then set them in the sun or in the oven on a very low setting to dry them out again

Obviously it’s best to store this flour in jars with lids To use it in your favorite recipes, just use it in place of traditional white flour and enjoy! The taste may take a bit to get used to, but you have to love getting something for free

There are many old traditions related to Live Oak trees One of those traditions concentrates on the fall, when the oak leaves begin to drop in the cooler climates It is said that going out and catching a falling oak leaf will provide you with tremendous luck and prosperity during the coming year Another belief is that you will not catch a cold that winter if you do so

It is not hard to see what many cultures through the ages have seen in live oak trees They are not only simply a beautiful tree, they can also supply us with much of what we need, including shade or acorns, and just maybe a little bit of good fortune One thing is clear—with so much majesty and many uses, the precious live oak tree will be around for many generations to come

Southern Pride Tree Farm grows Highrise Live Oaks, Cathedral Live Oaks, and Standard Live Oaks at wholesale prices. If you need a mature landscaping tree you can buy your live oak direct through owner Jimmy Gray, and his wife Terry Gray.
