No home would be considered complete in this day in time if it did not have electricity It is just impossible to imagine not having it even though there are still so many families around the world that do not have this particular luxury We use electricity for so many different purposes on a daily basis We do tend to waste a lot of it without even realizing that we are When our bill comes in every month it is getting a lot easier for us to think about ways we can save some of the electricity that we use

We usually do not give a lot of thought either about how safe our electrical wiring is and electrical items we use everyday When a light switch or outlet stops working, sometimes we will just ignore it and use a different one This can often happen in older homes that have faulty or outdated wiring and outlets There is more home fires started every year because of faulty or outdated wiring than you might think and it is important that you make sure yours in good working order

If you live in an older home and are not sure about the condition your wiring or fuse box is in, it might be a good idea to have an electrician come in and do an inspection He can repair any faulty outlets or light switches for you and examine your fuse box to make sure circuits are not being overloaded Sometimes people will use outlet adapters for a three pronged plug and put it in a two prong outlet You might have a power strip that is carrying current too many items Extension cords should not be used unless they are in good condition and for no longer than necessary Never use extension cords underneath carpets or rugs because this is just a fire waiting to happen

If you have lamps, kitchen or bathroom appliances, or power tools that have frayed cords or that give off sparks, do not use them Have the cords repaired before you use them again and definitely either fix or discard any electrical item that shocks you, gives off sparks, or has a smell of overheating when it should not Just by having your home wiring checked and keeping an eye on electrical items you can reduce the risk of having an electrical fire in your home a lot
