The Many Faces Of Wildfires

Author : Aydan Corkern

Wildfires, they are big and they are dangerous They can destroy anything that is in its path, and it can travel for miles and miles, taking lives and taking the homes of both animals and people The fire can reach all the way to the top of trees, burning them until they look like burned matches The grass can turn into ashes, plants can be burned up, and the sky will be filled with smoke This smoke is thick and hard to see through, and it is hot like your being cooked in an oven Your face, hair, and body will turn black from the smoke, and it can make you sick

Smoke can make a person dizzy or sick, it can burn the eyes, cause you to cough, and it can do a lot other things as well The smoke will look gray and black, and it can go really high and it can cloud up cities and towns if the wind causes it to The smoke from the fire is very toxic, and it can harm your health A wildfire can start by the smallest flame or a fire still smoldering, so you have to make sure a fire is out all the way Don’t throw something lit on the ground that can cause a fire to start When a fire starts, put everyone in the area or areas in danger, and it ruins or damages the land

When the smoke gets on your lungs, it makes you cough, wheeze, your skin to get irritated, your eyes to start to burn and water, your throat to get irritated, and can cause breathing problems When this happens, you will have to go to the hospital to get checked out and get breathing treatments If you get burned from the fire, you can be hospitalized depending on how bad you got burned and how big of areas the burns are If you see a wildfire, get out of the area, and don’t think that the fire won’t get to your house because it can and it can burn your house to the ground in minutes The fire can spread house to house through the neighborhood

When wildfires are started, it takes minutes or seconds to spread, and the damage can be really bad and they are very hard to put out It can take fire fighters days to put the fire out, depending on how big the fire is and how far it spreads Firefighters have to deal with this every year Some can be bad and others can be worse depending on how fast it burns, how high it gets, and how far the wind takes it People and animals get injured like a few or hundreds at a time or they can die from the fire

How The Environment Contributes To Water Damage

Author : Richard Barthallo

More often than not the water damage we get in our homes and properties are the direct result of our own negligence The environment, no matter how one looks at it, is such a very crucial factor in this phenomenon

Water is a basic, fundamental element of life, without which life would cease to exist Man, they say, can live for up to 14 days without food but will only last about five to seven days without water Such is the importance of water in our daily lives that we should not take it for granted Neither should we take for granted the environment upon which water comes from

Majority of the flood and water-related problems we face nowadays are the result of our own tinkering with the environment Much of the forest has been greatly denuded with barely enough foliage to provide adequate protection from climatic phenomena

Bodies of water like rivers, streams, and lakes have been turned into basins for our own wastes Atop its liquid surface are traces of oil and other harmful chemicals that all contribute to the worsening of the pollution of these natural elements

Our continued use of harmful gases and daily products that emit volatile gases into the atmosphere have contributed to the thinning of the ozone This phenomenon has greatly increased the warming of the whole planet, leading to melting of the polar ice caps and significantly chaotic changes in climate and weather patterns

All of these have been largely claimed to have great contribution to the degree and severity of flood and water damage we now experience Typhoons, storm surges, tsunamis, cyclones, storms, hurricanes, and earthquakes all have water as its primary method of destruction And there is clearly no way to stop all of these water-related phenomena

Without trees to hold as much rain water as the forest can possibly can, communities will always have to face the constant danger of mudslides and flash floods With the erosion of land formations that act as natural barriers against the fury of the sea, coastal communities will always be battered by storm surges and tsunamis

With the melting of the polar caps leading to an increase in the sea level, concurrent increases in water level inland will also bring about natural seepage of groundwater into our homes Flooded basements and crawlspaces will be a significantly common occurrence among households

Such is the effect of the environment on man’s daily life and on his existence that perhaps caring for and preserving the environment in its natural balance will help us reduce, if not totally eliminate the risk of flood and water damage concerns

Wet carpet drying is one of the back breaking tasks that need to be done immediately after flooding has occurred That is, if you decide to do the work yourself But before proceeding with wet carpet drying, you must consider the following possibilities:

* That the rug/carpet could fade in color and shrink from its original size

* That the stains made by the water could not be removed

* That the cleaning result might not be what you expected it to be

* That the unpleasant odor will not vanish entirely

If you are unsure whether you could do a good job out of wet carpet drying your home, then it is advisable to leave it to the professional cleaners who are more adept in cleaning and drying the carpet for you But should you decide to do the wet carpet drying yourself, you may try the following suggestions:

1 Remove wet carpet immediately If it is not glued or tacked, then this could easily be done However, if the carpet cannot be removed because it is glued or tacked down then get a sharp knife or scissors and cut it out

2 Roll the carpet up and put it outside If the carpet is heavy use a wheelbarrow to move it out of the house

3 Once the rolled rug has been carried out of the house, prop it up on a stand in a horse shoe manner to let the excess water drip off Or you could unroll it and hang it on the clothes line

4 After most of the excess water has dripped off, put the carpet on a flat surface (like the garage or cemented lawn) and gather the items needed for cleaning like liquid cleaner, water hose and brush Wet carpet drying requires that the carpet is on a flat surface before it is cleaned out

5 Attach the water hose to an outside faucet then spray sweep the carpet from one end to another Turn the carpet over to the other side and sweep it also from end to the other

6 If a stubborn mud or grime has stubbornly attached to the carpet then try brushing it off with the brush because when you do wet carpet drying no dirt or grime should be left on the carpet

7 Properly mix and pour the required cleaning liquid and spread it evenly on the surface of the rug Allow ample time to let the cleaning agent soak in; five (5) to ten (10) minutes is sufficient

8 Let the cleaning agent foam out by spraying the rug with water from one end to another Turn the rug over and spray it likewise with water Make sure that the spray of water goes in one direction only and away from you

9 A skillful wet carpet drying work needs the removal of any trace of the cleaning liquid from the carpet And this could be done by rinsing it thoroughly with water If needed, brush it to make sure that the cleaning solution is removed

10 Leave the carpet to dry on the flat surface under the sun Hanging it to dry will only form wrinkles and creases and will not be flat once you put it back on the floor

11 If the weather does not allow you to dry it under the sun, hang the carpet on a clothes line and try to wring the excess water off When the carpet is no longer dripping water take it inside the house and put it on a dry, clean flat surface Turn up the air conditioner, electric fan and dehumidifier to allow room air to flow and to help the carpet dry up Make sure to turn the carpet over from time-to-time so it dries up faster

12 When attempting to do wet carpet drying it is recommended that you do not leave the carpet to dry in a rolled up form This will render the carpet useless because not only will it have creases but will not stay flat on the floor

13 Before putting the carpet back to its original position, make sure that the floor and carpet is thoroughly dry

Add Coziness to Any Room with Indoor Shutters

Author : Christine Harrell

People who are looking at window coverings often never even think of indoor shutters Their mind automatically goes to window shades and blinds, skipping right over these traditional window treatments Yet they are the ideal choice for certain decors They are more effective at blocking light and heat than window blinds and safer than many treatments due to the lack of dangling cords

The Classic Design of Shutters

Even the finest wood blinds can’t quite match the warmth that indoor shutters bring to a room They have a characteristic look and feel that nothing else does

Shutters open one of two ways, depending on the size and proportions of the window Most designs open in the middle, folding in on each side of the window Some are single units that open from one side of the window

Large windows may use sectional mounts, allowing each section to be opened or closed independently This allows more control of the amount of light let into the room, but even when fully opened their frames obstruct the view

The width of the louver will change the character of the shutter Traditional or colonial shutters use narrower louvers, usually 1 1/4″ wide, to screen out some of the light even when the louvers are open Plantation shutters have wider louvers, as much as 4″ or more, and let in more light

Cafe shutters are not actually a style but a type of installation They cover only the lower portion of the window The upper portion either has a curtain or is left uncovered

Some interior shutter designs don’t use louvers at all Instead the frames have solid panels, cloth, or stained glass

The Best Environmental Control

Because of their heavier, thicker construction, these window coverings offer better protection that window shades or blinds They block light better than most window treatments, although there are dark window shades that are better They are one of the most energy efficient choices available and their privacy control is unmatched

Shutters block sound effectively, a unique trait other window coverings don’t share A closed shutter is like a wall and filters out almost all noise coming through the window This makes them ideal choices for windows that face noise sources such as nearby businesses, schools, or railroad crossings

A sturdy shutter adds security to a window that window shades can’t

A Little Goes a Long Way

What turns most people away from shutters is the cost They can be substantially more expensive than window blinds so often are not the choice for the entire house Instead, by picking which windows would most benefit from their unique characteristics, they work as a delightful accent to the overall decor of a home

These timeless window treatments add beauty and function to any room Take a look at their advantages and you’ll agree that they are wonderful choices for many of the windows in your home
