High urban areas like Ontario have scheduled road flushing that helps make the roads clean despite having a big population Road flushing is also done on a regular basis by using fire hydrants that helps clean the water pipe system and at the same time remove the dirt on the road pavement Being one of the high paced urban areas in North America, the concern of GTA or Greater Toronto Area on having clean potable water is imperative to sustain its populace Thereby, habitual water flushing is very important in order to prevent the propagation of bacteria and prevent the low circulation of water in identified areas of the water distribution system

The flushing technique which is usually employed is termed as “uni-directional flushing”, wherein the valves located within the network of pipes are closed in succession, and water is drawn from the pipes that were previously flushed via the pipe which must be cleaned This method ensures that all the pipes are revived and embedded sediments within are removed

The flush-out points are usually fire hydrants and blow-off-valves Water which is flushed from the hydrants is accumulated within a truck and de-chlorinated After the chlorine content of the water has been taken out, the water is released on the road to clean the surfaces, flush sewers and storm drains Re-using this type of water is not suitable and recommended for purposes other than road flushing It cannot be used for irrigation, filling of swimming pools and other intents

Road flushing by using fire hydrants and blow-off valves are generally done once a year Thus, when the schedule of road flushing is at hand, it is essential for property owners and residents to keep in mind the vital tips about road flushing which are as follows:

Landscaping and putting any types of obstruction around a fire hydrant must be avoided because the fire hydrants must be easily accessible to the Fire Department at all times

When road flushing is being done in your area, do not run tap water and avoid using the washing machine or dishwasher until the flushing is completed

When the road flushing crews are at work in your area, drive with care to avoid any accidents and follow road safety signs which were put in place while the activity is going on

Do not use or open your faucets for tap water while the flushing activity is ongoing, because water is expected to be discolored and may affect home chores like doing the laundry and washing the dishes Once the flushing is done, open a faucet outside your home after an hour and let the water run off till it becomes clear However, discoloration normally lasts up to four hours after the flushing is finished

If water pressure seems low, make sure to see the faucet screens and remove any sediments and particles that may have been trapped obstructing the normal flow of water

While water flushing may disrupt doing some needed house hold chores, it is done mainly to serve the following objectives:

To flush out sediments and other particles out of the main water lines to improve the quality of water served to the residents of the Greater Toronto Area

To verify whether the fire hydrants are operable or not

To identify any type of flaw within the whole water system

To check valves which are closed and flows which are weak in the main water lines
