It has already been proven that aside from keeping pollutants away from storm drains and surface water, street sweeping helps in maintaining good air quality in urban areas In the Greater Toronto Area, particularly in the town of Hamilton in Ontario, a study was made in 1999 regarding air quality and the effect of street sweeping on removing pollutants and small particles from the road that may lead to air pollution

Hamilton is an industrial town in Ontario in the Greater Toronto Area Because of the land use in the area, it is common for the roads to have dust, agricultural dusts and other types of roads and dust from construction and other types of industries in the area The dirt and dust on the roads also come from emissions from industries, vehicle emissions and other sources These dusts are called fugitive dusts

Toxic particles can attach themselves to these dusts Toxic materials such as manganese and chromium may be found in these fugitive dusts When the streets are not cleaned, these dusts may become airborne and cause health problems for people When it rains, these toxic dusts can then get washed into the storm drains and flow into natural bodies of water

The study on the impact of street sweeping on the air quality of Hamilton revealed that with the use of combined road sweeping technologies on the roads of Hamilton, particles with the size of less than ten microns were greatly reduced from the air in these areas The roads used for the tests were Barton, Wentworth, Barton, Ottawa and Sherman Today, companies that operate in Hamilton and in the other towns in the GTA use different methods of cleaning the roads- Street sweeping, vacuuming and road flushing

Companies in Hamilton were given a workshop in 2006 to raise awareness on fugitive dusts and they’re impacts to health and environment The workshop was conducted in cooperation with the Hamilton Port Authority, the local city government, the Ministry of the Environment, and Clean Air Hamilton

Controlling and managing fugitive tasks should be the responsibility of the industrial sites Some industries in Hamilton handle more particulates than others There are also industries that cause more emissions than others that lead to dusts and dirt being released into the air and onto the roads Aside from street sweeping and cleaning, industries in Hamilton should also implement industry best practices to reduce the release of dusts with particulates into the air

Street sweeping greatly reduces dusts that become airborne on the roads of Hamilton and other places in Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area Street sweeping equipments are designed to pick small particles on the road even near the curb While in the early years of street sweeping, a street that has been swept is already deemed clean, these days the technologies used in street sweeping continue to be improved to become more efficient in picking up smaller and smaller dirt The machines have also been improved to lessen emissions Aside from the regular mechanical brooms used, the more effective methods involve the vacuum machines The vacuum machines combined with the method of using machines to flush the roads, greatly reduces fugitive dusts

The main goal of this article is to present an initial introduction to the Stationary Equipment Refrigerant Management Program and California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32) program and legislation Changes are pending in 2009 AB 32 with legal compliance reporting for refrigerant gases as early as 2010

The California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32), first passed in 2006 with additional early actions taking effect in2010, is a broad and comprehensive directive with the goal of reducing greenhouse gasses (GHGs) by approximately 25% by the year 2020 This goal is derived from the increase of greenhouse gasses in California since 1990 The intent of the legislation to reduce greenhouse gasses to their 1990 levels, thereby reversing 16 years of pollution in less than 14 years

As part of the California Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32) the Air Resources Board (ARB) has approved an early action measure to reduce high-global warming potential (GWP) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by establishing new legislation and defining requirements related to improved monitoring of AC or HVAC systems, enforcement of regulations, reporting of refrigerant usage, and recovery, recycling, or destruction of high-GWP refrigerant gases

The greenhouse gasses (GHGs) as defined by the California’s AB 32 are identical to those gasses already identified in the Kyoto Protocol and are already being regulated, monitored, and managed by many other countries around the World In addition to carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the most widely known GHG, the following gasses are also defined as GHGs with high global warming potential (GWP) carbon equivalent emissions by the AB 32 legislation:

* Methane (CH4): a byproduct of waste decomposition, and natural geological phenomena; the majority of methane is derived from natural gas drilling

* Nitrous Oxide (N2O): a pollutant created by industrial processes, motor vehicle exhaust, and industrial air pollutants reacting with the atmosphere; like methane, nitrous oxide can also be a product of waste decomposition in nature and agriculture

* Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6): a gas used for various electrical applications, including gas insulated switchgear Sulfur Hexafluoride is also used for experimental applications

* Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs): a collection of commonly used refrigerant and aerosol gasses with a wide variety of other commercial applications CFCs and HCFCs are considered Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs), as defined in title VI of the US Clean Air Act (Section 608)

The California EPA’s Air Resources Board (CARB) has developed a complex and highly detailed system of greenhouse gas management for refrigerant gasses, known as the Stationary Equipment Refrigerant Management Program, and stricter standards for New Commercial Refrigeration Systems According to CARB this strategy includes careful monitoring of potential refrigerant gas leaks, improved record keeping and certification of personnel as well as specifications for PFC and HCFC recovery equipment

The proposed Stationary Equipment Refrigerant Management Program, which integrates two AB 32 early action measures, addresses the detailed monitoring and management of the PFCs and HCFCs noted above and includes tracking requirements for new and existing commercial and industrial refrigeration systems Likely to be implemented by January, 2010, is the monitoring and management of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants in large systems in the range of 2,000 pounds of refrigerant gas

CARB is charged with the monitoring GHGs and high GWP gasses, as well and the eventual development and enforcement of specific and quantitative new regulations covering carbon related emissions which refrigerant management with the tracking, reporting, cylinder management, and gas recovery for stationary refrigerant and air conditioning (AC) systems all becoming key integral parts

The CARB proposal could also involve fines for mismanagement of refrigerant record keeping, intentional venting of systems, and the inability to regularly submit the required refrigerant usage reports The CARB enforces Section 608 of the US Clean Air Act in specific and quantifiable terms in cooperation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as the existing national and state refrigerant regulations are applied to leaks, emissions, venting, and the recovery processes

The overall intent of CARB’s strategy is to monitor and reduce the introduction of man-made GHGs and high GWP gasses into the atmosphere, as called for in the California Global Warming Solutions ACT (AB 32) in effect since 2006 with tighter controls, monitoring, and overall regulations becoming enforceable by early 2010

Refrigerant management and reporting is a key consideration from a business strategic perspective related to asset management, from the effects such high GWP gases have on the environment, and from the relationship between refrigerants, greenhouse gases, and carbon equivalent emission As organizations with AC or HVAC systems containing refrigerant gas of 50 pounds or more will soon find out, the effective monitoring, management of data, and systematic reporting of refrigerant usage will be key to business success in our emerging carbon economy

Daniel Stouffer is a Product Manager for Verisae, a clean-tech software company. He manages Refrigerant Tracker. This web-based software makes it easy to monitor, manage, monetize, and report refrigerant gas usage across your enterprise. Stay in compliance with refrigerant management regulations. Eco friendly Fuel Source Wood Pellets

Author : Michael Beikircher

With issues like global warming plaguing the world these days, environmentalists are waking up to the use of more environment friendly sources of fuel One such revolutionary fuel source to be discovered is wood pellets Here we discuss how these seemingly small sources of energy can actually save the environment!

Carbon neutral source

The way wood pellets work is that they release exactly the same amount of carbon dioxide as what the growing plant would have used So that means whatever amount of carbon dioxide gets consumed by the growing plant ultimately gets released into the atmosphere when the wood gets burned This is why this is a very balanced and eco-friendly energy source There is no excess amount of carbon dioxide that gets emitted while burning this energy source

Even more carbon savings

As compared to other alternative environment friendly sources of energy such as solar energy and wind power it is the wood pellets which save up the maximum amount of carbon dioxide emissions Another attraction for this energy source is that one can extract a lot more from a single tree than is possible with other sources For example as little as 30% of a single tree is used in making wood pellets The remaining portion is used in making and cutting up wooden planks From just this 30% of the tree one can manufacture 3 tonnes quantity of wood pellets These can be sufficient to warm 200 homes for a duration of around a week! That is a lot of energy coming from a single tree!

How it gets made

The wood pellets are made by breaking the wood into sawdust and then drying it up This sawdust is then forced through die to compress into wood pellets These pellets then get cooled and then stored in special containers However the process can be tedious and painstaking as just one single particle of wood will take around 2 hours to get transformed into a pellet However, every amount of time taken will be worth the effort as this environment friendly source of energy is here to stay and is particularly useful in saving the environment

Planting new trees

The good thing about wood pellets is that they can always be manufactured as trees can be planted anytime This is unlike other alternative energy sources like solar energy and wind power which depend on the elements of nature The wood boilers are also considered to be much cheaper in cost as compared to other eco-friendly sources like wind power For example wind turbines have been found to be much more expensive than the boilers used for heating wood pellets

Using up forestry waste

Wood pellets can be very useful in eliminating landfills There are plenty of forests all across the world and the wasted wood from these can be put to very good use If such wood is left standing then it can result in the production of methane gas which again damages the environment Instead if it gets used in the manufacture of wood pellets then we can see some significant advantages It is in essence almost like recycling waste

Why Directory Submission Service

Author : Mark Cooper

Directory submission is one of the most important things to do when you are link building It is an assured way to get solid one way links back to your desired domain or sub domain I discovered that several of my clients waited until the last moment to renew their URLs, and the URLs had been back ordered by domain name resellers These resellers are currently selling us our domains, which thanks to my clients’ inaction are longer ours, for an extremely ridiculous price, which we have little choice but to pay Now why have these URLs become so dear? It is because the web sites were great resources

As you embark on your linking program, please remember to make sure your hold on your URL is extremely tight Now I pay enough for domain names to cover several years in advance This is important; fail in this area and you will find that after submitting your URL to 800-1000 directories (free and paid) you have no control over that URL anymore Now we can go into the details

The biggest directory project is the open directory project If you didn’t know about it well, now you do Its also called ODP or the “Google directory ” It is supposed to be hard to get approval but if you follow the basic steps you should never have a problem with the ODP (or any other directory for that matter) Other big directories include the Yahoo Directory; we will go into the hundreds of others later

Most directories have human editors and frown severely on multiple submissions, however if you have a big site with multiple categories, you can place your subcategories as sub domains and submit in different sections of the directory For example, if you have a web site that has one category on Windows programming (software) and another on networking (hardware), if you divide both into different sub domains, you can put one sub domain under “software, Windows programming” and the other under “hardware, networking ”

It will not be considered spam since the two URLs cover separate topics Note however that for branding purposes it is always best to have one web site which covers one topic, and in case you run into an overly strict “volunteer” editor (most of them are overworked and not paid anyway), it is sometimes better to submit just one URL to a directory from your site

Directories want to offer a service If they are good at listing, they get traffic; if they are bad, they don’t They need relevant listings This is why some people find it hard to get listed; a lot of sites try to get listed on unpaid directories without being relevant This will definitely make directory submission hard

Your directory submission should be done when your website is fully functional and ready for viewing Some advise that it should be done once your domain name is registered, but then there will be nothing for the humans to review You must have finished building the basics of your site before you submit your URL for approval
